An Aboriginal owned company has been selected as business of the year by SaskBusiness Magazine.

Athabasca Basin Development is a mining and resource company focusing on northern Saskatchewan.

“We are very honoured and proud to be selected as this year’s business of the year,” the company’s director of communications Kristy Jackson says. “For us it’s recognition for the level of success we have achieved and that our efforts toward building wealth for the Athabasca Basin region is showing some results.”

ABD puts a big focus on investing in Aboriginal employment.

Jackson says the success they have had in employing Aboriginal people stems from placing a priority on engagement.

“Improving Aboriginal employment benefits everyone in the province. Aboriginal people are a young and fast growing population and are currently underutilized in the workforce. There is a tremendous opportunity for businesses to engage Aboriginal people in the workforce.”

Athabasca Basin Development is owned by all seven First Nation bands in the Athabasca Basin region.

An article on the company will be featured in the December issue of SaskBusiness.
