A new variety show debuts on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network this January where absolutely no topic is off limits.
“Guilt Free Zone” is the creation of Juno-award winning Aboriginal musician Derek Miller.
Miller says the goal of the show is to explore settler and Indigenous peoples’ collective guilt through open dialogue where absolutely anything and everything is open for discussion.
“The themes we explore sex, we explore weed, we explore the Canadian genocide of Indigenous people,” he says.
He adds sometimes the best way to explore serious topics is through satire.
“We’ve got different kinds of medicine and laughter is probably one of the best universal medicines in the world.”
“Guilt Free Zone” will feature a number of Indigenous musical artists, dance and comedy performances plus “no-holds barred monologues.”
Musical performers include Inez Jasper, Jayli Wolf and hip hop artist Plex.
One of the featured guests on the show will also be burlesque dancer Miss Lou Lou la Duchesse de Riere who specializes in knife throwing, Martini downing and sharp shooting.
Derek Miller’s new album features late blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn’s former band Double Trouble.
He is from the Six Nations of the Grand River, Mohawk Territory in Ontario.
“Guilt Free Zone” premieres on APTN on Jan. 6.
