A man from the Chitek Lake area has been fined $4,900 for illegal outfitting.
Wayne Whitehead of the Pelican Lake First Nation was also convicted of unlawful possession of wildlife.
He appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on December 23.
Two public complaints were received by Saskatchewan Environment in November 2012 and February 2013.
Saskatchewan Environment spokesperson Gary Provencher says First Nations outfitting is allowed, but in this case it had been done outside of the authorized area.
“The outfitting must take place on First Nations land either on the reserve or treaty entitlement land that they have right of access to so In this case he was charged with outfitting on provincial land outside of the reserve.”
Provencher says a second investigation determined that Whitehead had taken a moose on private land.
“First Nations people may hunt on unoccupied crown land and other lands to which they have right of access including privately owned land but they must have permission from the land owner and in this case Mr Whitehead hadn’t done that.”
Provencher says the violations were reported to Conservation Officers at the Spiritwood office.
