A new show that debuts on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network tonight is promising viewers a food and cultural adventure.
“Moosemeat & Marmalade” features acclaimed First Nations cook Art Napoleon and classically trained European chef Dan Hayes exploring and preparing a signature dish from one of their cultures.
Napoleon says he and Hayes take turns stepping out of their comfort zone.
“Sometimes I’m the fish out of water with the Brit guy — he’s Marmalade. He might be leading me to European fare or taking me to fancy restaurants. And I don’t know anything about those kind of things because I really am a bush cook.”
The 13-part documentary series also looks at hunting, gathering, urban foraging and other topics related to sustainable and ethical food production and preparation.
Napoleon says it’s important to show the audience that you can still make tasty dishes while living off the land.
“A lot of these things are things that get overlooked. So it’s good, I think, for people to be educated on that front — learning it’s still possible to live off the land. Not just live off the land, but make some pretty good tasting meals out of it, out of the stuff that comes from the land.”
Tonight’s premiere of “Moosemeat & Marmalade” airs at 9 p.m. Saskatchewan time on APTN.
