Cameco Looking to Recycle Uranium Byproduct

Cameco Corporation is hoping to get the blessing of a federal regulator in the near future to recycle uranium byproduct at its Key Lake mill.

The byproduct would be shipped from Cameco processing facilities in Blind River and Port Hope, Ontario.

Cameco spokesman Lyle Krahn says there is still some uranium that can be extracted from the byproduct.

He says the uranium in question would come from ore originally mined in northern Saskatchewan, and that’s why the company feels it’s a plan that makes sense.

Krahn says if it’s approved, the uranium byproduct processed at Key Lake would make up only one per cent of the uranium that’s getting processed there.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is expected to hand down its decision on Cameco’s application before Christmas.

Cameco’s plan has already received the blessing of the Environmental Quality Committees — advisory boards made up of northern residents.
