The Prince Albert Raiders Hockey Club was in Montreal Lake yesterday to hold a practice in the community.

The team held their practice at the local rink as members of the community watched.

After the practice, the team was treated to a traditional meal and were taken ice fishing.

Montreal Lake council member Roger Bird said it was an important milestone to have the entire Raiders team travel all the way to the community.

“For them to come to our First Nations community, I think it broke barriers and was a step in the right direction,” said Bird, who is the council member responsible for sports and recreation.  “I think it is the first time the entire Raider team has ever come up to our community of Montreal Lake.”

Bird said he hopes more Aboriginal hockey players will be encouraged to play hockey at a higher level after these types of visits.
