An arson fire at the Reindeer Lake School in Southend has left local students in the community temporarily without a school.

The school has been closed since the February 20 incident.

Police say there was no significant fire damage to the school, but the facility was heavily water-damaged by the sprinkler system.

School education coordinator and Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation associate director of education Richard Jobb says crews have been working diligently to finish the repairs and clean-up the school.

“First of all, we have some people coming out to assess the damage. And then they will be coming back to complete the clean-up. And after that, a health inspection will have to take place,” said Jobb.  “It’s all about safety right now, but we are working together with different agencies to get the school open as soon as possible.”

Jobb says he hopes they can get all the work done by Friday so a health inspection can take place that day.

He says the earliest the school could be open is next Monday.

In the meantime, local students are continuing their studies at the youth centre and the learning centre in Southend.

RCMP are still conducting their investigation in to who started the blaze.
