Creighton has been eliminated from the list of communities being considered to host a nuclear waste storage facility.
The announcement was made by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization.
The NWMO says it is concluding preliminary assessment work in Creighton and another community in Ontario.
Communications Manager Mike Krizanc says a community meeting was held last night and the announcement was made.
He says new geological studies in the vicinity of Creighton have revealed geological complexities that reduce the likelihood of finding a suitable site to safely host a nuclear waste repository.
“The areas themselves were very, very small and that limited the available room for the repository because the surrounding area was even more complex so that if you had to move the repository one way or the other, there was nowhere to go”.
Two other northern Saskatchewan communities, Pinehouse and the English River First Nation, had also been considered as sites to host a nuclear waste storage facility.
Those two communities were ruled out in 2013.
Krizanc says he appreciates the efforts made by the people of Creighton, Flin Flon and Denare Beach during the assessment process.
Nine other communities, all in Ontario, are still being considered to host a nuclear waste repository — but it will take several more years before the site for the project can be confirmed.
