An educational partnership between a Saskatchewan school division and surrounding First Nations will continue thanks to a couple of provincial grants.

Two grants totalling $150,000 have been given to the Prairie Spirit School Division for its continued partnerships with the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation and the Beardy’s and Okemasis First Nation.

The goal of the partnership and the grants is to have First Nations students on reserves have the same supports of students living off-reserve.

“The ultimate goal of the partnerships is to have students engaged in their learning,” said Prairie Spirit Superintendent Kim Beaulieu.  “I like the idea that this is an investment in the future, that this is really important for all of our youth, so they can be engaged in contributing to our province.”

All communities involved have set goals of improving literacy, numeracy, and graduation rates.  The school division says some of the grants will be used for supplies, salaries, and professional development.

The provincial government established these grants last year to offer more support to First Nations and Métis students.
