A guard at the RCMP detachment in Meadow Lake is accused of sexually assaulting a woman being held in custody.

The alleged incident came to light after the detachment commander reviewed video of the detachment’s cell block area on Tuesday.

The footage showed the on-duty guard removing an adult female prisoner from the area — something that was not part of his duties.

An investigation was launched and a charge of sexual assault was laid.

RCMP spokesperson Mandy Maier says the detachment commander wasn’t looking for anything in particular when the video was reviewed.

“There was no complaint received.  There’s no formal policy for reviewing cell block footage.  Detachment commanders are responsible for ensuring the safety of individuals lodged in cells.  In this incident, the detachment commander was just conducting a review of the video of the cell block area.”

The accused, 71-year-old Dennis Bienvenue, has since been relieved of his duties.

His first court appearance is scheduled for June 8 in Meadow Lake Provincial Court.

Bienvenue was working at the detachment through the Corps of Commissionaires.

Maier says alleged victims of assaults in RCMP holding areas are offered supports.

“Typically, in similar files, we would have our Victim Services unit assist with whatever may be needed.  Each situation is different, but there is assistance that can be offered to the victim.”

Maier couldn’t say if the alleged victim was still in custody.
