The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has issued a request for action to Cameco and AREVA.

The request was issued after Cameco reported two events at its Key Lake uranium mill involving the unplanned release of uranium dust into the work environment.

Operations at the mill were temporarily halted last month.

A similar incident was also reported in January but exposures for both events were well below regulatory limits.

Cameco Spokesperson Gord Struthers says the request for more information shows how serious the regulatory process is.

“What it shows is that the regulator is concerned about the two incidents that happened, one in January and one of February and they’re taking steps to ensure that the drying processes at all Canadian uranium mills are safe for workers”.

Struthers says it is important to note that no workers were ever in any danger by the release of uranium dust.

Officials with the CNSC say they are satisfied with the actions taken by the two companies, but concerned about the similarities between the two incidents.
