Doucette, Chartier Nominated for Metis Awards

A number of Metis citizens from Saskatchewan will be presented with awards tomorrow in Saskatoon.

 

Twenty-five candidates in seven different categories will compete for the “Heart of the Metis Awards” at a ceremony at Saskatoon’s Odeon Events Centre.

 

Activist Robert Doucette and Metis National Council president Clem Chartier have been nominated in the foundation category — an award presented to someone who has advanced the cause of Metis people throughout the province.

 

As well, Solomon Carriere of Cumberland House and Al Rivard of La Ronge are some of the northern names up for mention.

 

METSI executive director and event organizer Constance Hourie says a desire to spread some of the “good news” stories happening in Metis communities is one of the big reasons why the awards were created.

 

Awards will also be given to outstanding volunteers, employers and war veterans.

 

Hourie says she hopes this year’s event is the first of many.

 

It all begins tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.
