An Aboriginal hockey tournament featuring a few ex-NHL players is getting underway in Prince Albert today.

The Prince Albert Grand Council Senators Cup Full Contact Hockey Tournament features several Aboriginal teams from Saskatchewan vying for the $15 thousand top prize.

The tournament has also drawn some players who’ve played in the AHL and on European pro teams.

Mel Mercredi, an organizer for the tournament, says participants should expect a good experience.

“We’re kind of putting it together like we would if we were hosting the First Nations Winter Games, so professionally done. We’re having a four-referee system all games. We have a high payout for prizes. Trying to provide the best possible entertainment service and event for all athletes and participants that are watching, as well.”

Mercredi says the draw includes some northern teams.

“I know Team Athabasca recently participated in our rec adult hockey tournament in January — so to participate in this event, that means a lot. It’s great for the spectators, as well. We get a lot of calls from the Athabasca region that they’re going to come down and watch because Team Athabasca is participating.”

DJ King (St. Louis Blues/Washington Capitals) and Kelly Guard (Ottawa Senators) are a couple of the participating players with NHL experience.

The puck drop for the first game was at noon today. The tournament will run until Sunday at the Art Hauser Centre.
