Metis leaders will be getting an update this weekend on the status of the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan’s massive land claim in northwest Saskatchewan.
The claim was launched in 1994, but is still in the research phase.
Regina lawyer Doug Kovach will update the Northwest Metis Council on the land claim’s progress in Ile-a-la-Crosse today and tomorrow.
MNS president Dwayne Roth will attend the meeting as the chair of the North West Metis Land Claim Committee.
He says despite the fact his leadership has been contested, the land claim remains his number one priority and he really wants to see it go to trial by 2006.
Roth feels that’s a realistic target since the research into the land claim is almost complete.
Roth also says the Metis land claim should be helped by the recent Supreme Court ruling on Aboriginal title.
