For the second consecutive year, Northlands College teamed up with Visions North Community Futures and Beaver River Community Futures for a video essay contest with an out of the world prize on the line.

Over 40 college students entered the Northern Visionaries contest this year and the grand prize was a trip to Top Gun fighter pilot training school in California and a $2,500 bursary.

Lindsay Fitch of Air Ronge was named the winner at a gala on Friday evening in La Ronge.

“Last year, I came in second place,” says Fitch.  “So this year I really worked hard to get this first place this year — and it’s also the last year I’m able to qualify, so I’m happy.  It’s overwhelming right now.”

The topic for the contest this year was, “What would you do if you were mayor or chief of your community?”

Bill Hogan with Visions North believes this contest can open up a lot of doors.

“I think it’s opened their eyes to their communities,” says Hogan.  “The feedback we’ve gotten already is that they’re thinking more about what’s going on in their communities and how they personally can make a difference.”

The contest will be running next year, but officials are remaining tight-lipped on what will be the grand prize.
