Muskoday First Nation students received a boost in technology Thursday afternoon to help them with their studies.
The school received 50 learning tablets through a partnership between PotashCorp and One Laptop per Child Canada.
“We are super excited to have the tablets here,” said school principal Bobbi Gray. “We do a lot of online and resource base learning so it is really exciting to have these apps for the kids.”
The tablets feature several apps that take the students through educational games under the categories of math, science, language studies and there are a few apps that have an Aboriginal focus.
“Technology is a part of the future for young learners,” said Leanne Bellegarde Director of Aboriginal Strategy for PotashCorp. “It is exciting to see the excitement and enthusiasm in these kids and we hope it continues to inspire and help them stay in school.”
Rachel Ward, with One laptop per Child, says an increase in technology has proven to be a big help for on-reserve students.
“This is just another way to get kids interested in school and engaged,” said Ward. “They do come preloaded with over 300 Aboriginal books and apps so they see a lot of their culture and are well-represented.”
More tablets will be handed out Friday to students at Whitecap Dakota First Nation.
