Rebate Available to Northerners Without Phones

The Crown Investments Corporation has made arrangements to get a utility rebate into the hands of people who don’t have a phone.

A $137 credit appears on the December phone bill of all SaskTel residential customers.

A community development official in La Ronge says the system is unfair to northerners — many of whom don’t have a phone, much less a SaskTel account.

CIC spokeswoman Karen Schmidt says provisions have been made for people in that situation, and all they have to do is produce a SaskEnergy or SaskPower bill with their name on it to qualify.

Schmidt says the government didn’t want to spend a lot of money on administration costs, so that’s why this option hasn’t been advertised much.

Schmidt also wants to emphasize that only one rebate will be provided per household.

If anyone wants to apply for an application form or desires more information about the rebate, they can call 1-866-366-6611.
