Smoke from nearby forest fires remains the main concern in the La Ronge area today.
It’s hoped last night’s rain and today’s forecast for more rain will help firefighters battling several wildfires.
There was rain and lightning in the La Ronge area last night — and today’s forecast for the region is calling for a few showers beginning near noon and into this evening, but also the risk of more thunderstorms.
La Ronge Mayor Thomas Sierzycki says the weather yesterday did not cooperate with Wildfire Management for fire mapping purposes. Siezycki says it is hoped that they will be able to map the fires today.
Yesterday, health authorities recommended those with breathing problems in the La Ronge area to leave.
Sierzycki says about 600 people have been registered and voluntarily evacuated from La Ronge, Air Ronge and the adjacent reserves. According to the mayor, “numerous others” were gone already or have left without registering and are south on their own accord.
At last word, no communities in the La Ronge area were directly threatened by the fires — although Sucker River is still on standby in case a general evacuation is ordered.
