Northlands College put on an open house on Wednesday for its Line Tech Fundamentals Course.
Students who take the program can gain employment as a power lineman upon completion.
Bruce Skilliter is an instructor with the program. He says the course has been successful so far.
“We started out with 27 guys and today we have 21 guys and they’re all definitely what we would call ‘hireables’,” says Skilliter. “They’re up and ready to go work on somebody’s crew somewhere.”
Toby Greschner, the CEO of Northlands College, says this program is important for the north.
“All of us know as we drive around the north that we’re seeing the trucks of companies that are replacing power lines,” says Greschner. “We want to make sure that northern people are in those jobs because these are really good paying jobs.”
The program is expected to run again in the spring. If you would like more information on the course, you can visit trainnorth.ca.
