UPDATE – Statement from La Ronge Mayor Thomas Sierzycki
La Ronge Fire Situation Update (10:30 am, Tuesday, June 30)
-No fire threat to Town La Ronge at this time. Fire conditions are extreme in the region but no major changes thus far.
-A Health Advisory (SMOKE) is in place for the La Ronge region.
-English Bay, Sucker River, Lamp Lake and Wadin Bay remain evacuated.
-Highway restrictions by convoy are in place for Highway 102 north and Highway 2 south. Highway 165 East is open as well.
-The Egg Fire (which joined the Clarke Fire) is still 12km away from La Ronge. The smoke is hampering fire spread and smoke is expected to remain today. Low relative winds are also expected.
-A cut line is being put in around the communities to provide opportunities for back burning if he need arises.
-A new fire map with fire boundaries should be available today. Will update when made available.
Political leaders from Saskatchewan are visiting the north today to assess the wildifre situation.
NDP Leader Cam Broten is in La Ronge today and Premier Brad Wall was is expected to fly in to Prince Albert and La Ronge.
Firefighters are holding their own, but are not making progress in their efforts to contain forest fires that are threatening a number of communities.
A mandatory evacuation order has been issued by Northern Municipal Services for the Subdivision of Lamp Lake.
Officials say both the Egg and Eli wildfires are moving towards the community.
And just last evening, the chief of the LLRIB, Tammy Cook-Searson said that due to the heavy smoke, vulnerable people were being moved south from Little Red River Reserve.
Highway 2, Highway 102 and Highway 969, the Molanosa Road continue to be closed because of fires.
Highways personnel have been escorting vehicles south on Highway 2 and 102 as conditions allow.
Other closures according to the Highways Hotline are Highway 916, Highway 165 west of the 910 Junction, to Beauval.
And Highway 955 from La Loche North is closed due to forest fires.
