Fire Tower Restoration Project on Schedule

A program officer with Saskatchewan Environment says by this time next year, around thirty new fire towers could be in place in the North.

Leo Gardiner says the 100-foot steel structures are being

constructed to replace the old models, which were condemmed about two years ago.

Gardiner says the province had been looking at the prospect of using aircraft to do the job, but in the end deemed it too expensive.

He says the new towers will begin in an area just north of Prince Albert and extend as far north as La Loche and as far east as Cumberland House.

He adds communities in the Far North will continue to be serviced by aircraft.
