Cameco is doing its part in helping provide support to the thousands of evacuees from northern Saskatchewan.

The company, along with other northern groups, will be providing supplies and entertainment to the evacuees throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta.

CEO Tim Gitzel says it is important to support the northern communities as well as all the people who have been displaced.

“It is hard for us to imagine how difficult it is for those families taken from their homes and put in these evacuation centres, which we are grateful for, but it is not home,” said Gitzel.

A group of volunteers will be travelling to Cold Lake, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Regina over the next three days.

A travelling kid’s carnival will be the main attraction and Gitzel says it will hopefully be a way to provide relief from the day to day monotony they are facing.

Cameco is doing this in partnership with Kitsaki, Des Nedhe, Points Athabasca and also help from WestWind.

“A few people in our shop here in Cameco took the lead and went to the other companies who stepped up immediately…so that’s the real Saskatchewan spirit,” said Gitzel.

The volunteers arrived in Cold Lake last night and will travel throughout Saskatchewan on Wednesday and Thursday.
