Federal MP Rob Clarke says the federal government will do everything they can to ensure people in northern Saskatchewan are safe and that the fire response will continue.

The Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River MP met with members of the media in Prince Albert Tuesday morning to discuss the federal response to the fire.

Clarke says the biggest concern from the federal government is for the safety of all Canadians.

“Fire is very unpredictable and can change at a moment’s notice and we are just trying to make sure the general public is safe,” said the northern MP.

The federal government says they have sent more than 6,500 blankets and 4,000 beds to the evacuation shelters to support the thousands of evacuees.

Prince Albert MP Randy Hoback was also on hand to answer questions and when asked how long the north will remain in an emergency situation he said it is difficult to tell.

“I think if we could predict the weather and get a nice rain through the area, but we can’t control the weather, so we have to act accordingly,” said Hoback.

Both Hoback and Clarke were unable to provide a time frame for how long the military is expected to help out in the north.
