The wildfires in northern Saskatchewan continue to burn and already several cabins at La Ronge-area lakes have been eaten by scorching flames.
Gordon Stomp is a commercial fisherman and the mayor of Air Ronge. He says his two cabins, a storage shed and equipment have been destroyed by the blaze east of La Ronge at Pickerel Bay.
“There’s absolutely nothing left,” said Stomp today. “It’s part of my livelihood, that’s one of my main fishing camps that I spend a lot of my time in the winter at.”
Stomp says he will rebuild and he estimates the damage to his property is around $100,000.
“Living in the north, you always know that threat is a possibility,” said Stomp. “For many years, it (a wildfire) hasn’t happened, so it’s kind of a shock when it does happen.”
