English River Referendum Fails to Pass

There’s word the English River First Nation didn’t get enough votes in yesterday’s referendum to turn some property just south of Saskatoon into a reserve.

It needed a simple majority, but the unofficial word from Patuanak is that the band came up 45 votes short.

There’s been no official confirmation, and it’s not clear what options the band has at this point.

The band has big plans for the Grassroods area, where it owns 140 acres of land.

The First Nation is hoping to build a hotel, a truck stop and a strip mall on its land.

It already owns a gas station there.
