A Pelican Narrows fisherman pulled in two big ones, defying the odds, in an impressive fishing feat on the weekend.
Ronald Highway won the Senator Pierre Settee Memorial Heaviest Walleye Derby, in Cumberland House, over the weekend catching the same size fish on both Saturday and Sunday to win the tournament.
On Saturday, Highway pulled out a nine-pound, 12-ounce walleye, said Bill Thomas, the weigh-master of the tournament.
Thomas says on Sunday, Highway went back to the same place he caught the first one along the Saskatchewan River near Cumberland House.
“Never have I seen anything like that before, the same person, the same area, pulling out the exact same weight,” says Thomas. “When we released they were like 30, 40 miles apart from where we released the first one. I don’t think it swam back to its home – must have pulled out the twin.”
Highway says he’s never caught walleye that big before – let alone two.
“We started laughing, I couldn’t believe it, me and my brother in-law,” Highway said. “I was holding first and second, I was pretty nervous the last couple hours.”
Highway won a truck for Saturday’s catch and an SUV for Sunday’s walleye. He gave his wife the SUV.
