The University of Saskatchewan announced an aboriginal mentorship program for science, technology, engineering and math students.
The university and the Saskatchewan Research Council signed an agreement to continue the Aboriginal Mentorship Program.
Students like Thomas Lavergne will get paired up with a mentor who is in the same field of study, providing guidance and hands on employment.
The fourth-year environmental engineering student spent the past summer working for the Saskatchewan Research Council.
Lavergne says the best part of the job was spending time in northern Saskatchewan.
“I learned some technical skills like the proper procedures for water sampling,” says Lavergne. “Some field skills like how to take good field notes, how to prepare myself in the field.”
Lavergne was paired up with Ian Wilson, a manager with the research council.
He says Lavergne is really good at what he does and would like to have him work with them after graduation.
“If someone offers you a job come and talk to me first,” Wilson says he told Lavergne. “We really want him when he graduates.”
