The paperwork is underway to have the Wanuskewin Heritage Park declared a world heritage site.

Members of the Canadian Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization visited the park this week to gather facts to make a case for the international designation.

Executive committee member Lenore Swystun says the first step is to be placed on the considered list.

She says the process to achieve world heritage designation will elevate Wanuskewin’s international status.

“It’s a pretty sacred list because once you are on that list, that means you have a whole criteria to ensure that place is not going to be tampered in the future,” Swystun said.

The process may take a few years to complete, she added.
