International mining giant BHP Billiton sent out layoff notices to employees and contractors last week.
In Saskatchewan, 70 people will lose their job between now and next June.
The company sent MBC Radio the following statement:
“We regret that we are reducing our workforce by 76 employees and contractors across our Potash business in Canada. The impacted employees have been notified that they have been offered job redundancies. It is expected that the affected people will be leaving the organization from December 2015 to June 2016.”
Company spokesperson Chris Ryder says most of the layoffs will be those who work at the Saskatoon head office while a handful from the Jansen Mine site.
“They would have been similarly affected to the rest of the employees. Some aboriginal employees will be made redundant as some of the other employees have but there is no concentration in that area or any other area.”
Ryder says the lay-offs won’t affect the Jansen Mine project adding the lay off focused on functional areas like human resources and finance.
