The Saskatoon woman accused of killing a family of four in a drunk driving accident near Warman over the weekend is well-known in the Saskatchewan wrestling and music communities.

Catherine Loye McKay, 49, went by the name of Cathy Cougar on the wrestling circuit. She began her wrestling career in 2001.

She is also a singer-songwriter and a classically trained pianist. McKay is originally from Buffalo Narrows where she worked for an organization called Kids First North until she took on a job in Saskatoon within the past year. At that time she was the manager for a community radio and cable station in the community.

McKay currently resides in Saskatoon where she is listed as the executive director of the Saskatoon District Sports council.

McKay made her first appearance in Saskatoon court Monday morning. She is facing three counts of impaired driving causing death, and was remanded into custody Thursday.

The crash happened at Highway 11 and Wanuskewin Road early Sunday morning. Police say four people were in the vehicle that was hit.

Court documents identify the victims as 34-year-old Jordan Van de Vorst, 33-year-old Chanda Van De Vorst and two-year-old Miguire Van De Vorst.

A five-year-old girl who was also in the vehicle later died in hospital.

McKay has been involved in Regina-based wrestling outfit High Impact Wrestling (HIW Canada).

The company’s owner Mike Roberts says they’re aware of the charges against McKay, and called it a “troubling situation” that someone they know so well is currently behind bars for such a serious incident.

We’ll have more reaction to this charge later today from HIW and from McKay’s former coworkers at Kids First North.
