Nearly four years after a man died in his Saskatchewan Penitentiary cell, the public will hear how it happened.

Inmate Andy Allan Brassard was only 26 when he was found dead on Nov. 16, 2012.

At the time of his death, Correctional Services Canada reported that correctional officers immediately performed CPR and when paramedics arrived they were also unable to revive him.

The province’s Ministry of Justice is now announcing a public inquest into Brassard’s death will get underway next week in Prince Albert, and is set to last a week.

Brassard had been serving a three year, six month sentence for aggravated assault.

Coroner’s inquests are called when the coroner is unsure of whether the person’s death was preventable. An inquest can also be sparked if the coroner is unsure if the death was of natural causes.

In September of 2015, another inmate was found dead at the Penitentiary. Arthur William Michel, 53, was found in his cell in the facility’s minimum security area.

The announcement of Brassard’s inquest comes only weeks after a woman being held at Pine Grove Correctional Centre died in her cell. Pine Grove is also in the Prince Albert area. Shauna Wolf died on Dec. 27, 2015.
