The Kahkewistahaw First Nation has introduced a First Nations Goods and Services Tax.

It is known as the Kahkewistahaw Community Improvement Fee, and is being administered by the Canada Revenue Agency.

In a release, the band says anyone who acquires a taxable supply of goods or services on reserve lands is required to pay the KCIF.

The rate is five percent, the same as the GST.

Chief Louis Taypotat says it is hoped the funds generated by the KCIF will benefit the community and band members.

The tax started being applied on December 11.
