The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is optimistic the upcoming federal budget will make good on Liberal election promises.
Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau indicated Aboriginal people will be a top priority in his upcoming budget.
Morneau also acknowledged the country’s economic situation is worse than first anticipated.
FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron says the minister’s comments honour treaty.
“We need to get serious about addressing the socio-economic disparities that have arisen due to Treaty neglect,” Cameron said in a statement.
The FSIN wants an increase to education funding that’s comparable with provincial funding of $10,500 per student.
The federation also wants more houses, calling for 13,000 new homes.
“The lost opportunity cost, not to mention actual cost, will only get higher,” Cameron said.
