This week, the provincial group for aboriginal friendship centres is recognizing Elders in Prince Albert.
The respected members of the urban aboriginal community were invited to a banquet in their honour, which was hosted by the Aborginal Friendship Centres of Saskatchewan at Prince Albert’s Indian and Metis Friendship Centre on Wednesday.
Cathi Wilson-Loescher, with the provincial group, said it’s a powerful thing to have about 50 elders in the same room.
“It was a really powerful afternoon with them, they’re such strong people. And we kind of did a prize for the oldest Elder there and she’s 87 and there were lots of them that are close to that age. So it’s just amazing how much life they’ve experience and how many hardships they’ve overcome,” she said.
Wilson-Loescher was hit by the fact that the Elders are focused on the future of their people, instead of their tough past.
She heard a united voice that Elders want to help those who are struggling.
