The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is joining another province’s assembly in calling for a meeting with the premier.

Grand Chief Derek Neepinak, with the Manitoba Assembly of Chiefs wants both Saskatchewan and Manitoba’s premiers at the meeting to discuss hunters who were ticketed while in Saskatchewan.

He says hunters they were gathering for their families when officials in our province threatened them and confiscated their moose meat.

FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron is weighing in, saying the treaty issue is immediate and important.

Vice Chief Bob Merasty said a meeting with all parties is already scheduled in Yorkton in a few weeks’ time.

From Merasty’s view, a formal protocol agreement is on its way soon – it would relate to the Ministry of Environment’s compliance and enforcement branch when it comes to First Nations interests. He added that for now, they have a foundation for interim actions.
