Elections Saskatchewan is putting a call out for 10,000 people – in the north and across the province – to help with the spring election.
Among the 1,700 polling places that will pop up for Saskatchewan’s spring election, not all are accessible. Elections Saskatchewan has found that 15 locations do not meet their checklist for those in wheelchairs and with limited mobility.
Pelican Narrows Hall and Yellow Quill First nation are among them.
Elections Saskatchewan has taken steps to make sure those spots will accommodate all voters, said spokesman Tim Kydd.
“We have a remedy for each one of those. Often it’s having an extra information officer there on site to assist. It could be the curbside voting option where we bring the ballot box out to you and your parking spot when you come vote,” he said.
He also stresses that people can vote by mail as an absentee voter, and that’s actually available right now.
April 4 is the big day as the Saskatchewan Party, NDP and other parties make their bid to govern our province.
But to make the election happen, Elections Saskatchewan needs some help.
Kydd says there are plenty of options for employment: from greeting voters and checking identification, to reading ballots, to checking off voters.
“It could be as long as a month where we need someone working in a returning office in a returning office in a specific constituency for the entire month of March. We need people for working the five days of advance voting so we know advance voting is March 29 to April 2 so we need to fill those positions and then the big push is on Monday April 4,” he said.
Some people might be wary about signing up to work in the provincial election, because it took months for Elections Canada to pay out more than 2,000 workers for the federal election.
Kydd emphasizes that the province’s elections office is a completely separate organization. By Elections Saskatchewan’s standards, people are to be paid within four to six weeks of the election.
This year, Elections Saskatchewan is adding an option for elections workers to donate their earnings directly to a charity of their choice.
