Paul Lafrance of HGTV’s Decked Out speaks with carpentry students in Saskatoon.

A high school apprenticeship program currently building a house for Whitecap Dakota First Nation was paid a visit by a couple HGTV personalities Friday afternoon.

Damon Bennet (Holmes Inspection, Holmes Makes It Right) and Paul Lafrance (Disaster Decks, Decked Out) stopped in at Mount Royal Collegiate in Saskatoon to do some hands-on work with the students.

The students are currently working in the High School Carpentry Apprenticeship Program (HCAP) in the PotashCorp Learning Lab.

HCAP students are currently in the process of building a home that, when completed, will be moved to Whitecap Dakota First Nation.

Bennet says he wishes he had a program like this when he was growing up. He also says a program like this is amazing because it is teaching an entire generation of kids about the trades.

“We need these kids into the trades and this is the best way to do it by giving them some on hands experience…this program is awesome,” says the popular television personality.

Bennet also says it meant a lot to him to see where the house was going.

“Seeing these kids give back to their communities as well as teaching them how to build is a win-win situation,” says Bennet.

After first sharing a meal and speaking with the students Bennet and Lafrance helped the students install a wall in the house.
