Residents of La Ronge and nearby communities like Wadin Bay and Napitak may notice an increase in landfill fees.
The new fees take effect on Friday, but for the average person, there will not be much of a change.
Local residents will still be able to deliver up to two yards to the landfill without a fee, says Joe Hordyski, the board chair of the Lac La Ronge Regional Waste Management Corporation.
A fee of $14 per yard will be charged to non-residents and for garbage hauled to the landfill from outside the region.
Hordyski says the goal is to extend the life of the landfill.
“We are trying to address the volumes that are coming in to our landfill because if we continue to use it the way we are, we have a life span of about 15 years.”
There are also some special charges for refrigerators, deep freezes and air conditioners which require removal of Freon.
