Raymond Ahenakew accepting his honourary degree with U of S President Peter Stoichef and U of S Chancellor Blaine Favel

A former president of the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies and an advocate for First Nations self-governance was honoured at the University of Saskatchewan.

Ray Ahenakew was given an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the university during Wednesday’s spring convocation ceremony.

The 73 year-old from Ahtakakooop First Nation says he was honoured to receive the doctorate.

“I think it just signifies a lifetime of work and I feel good coming out of here,” said Ahenakew.

He also hopes it will inspire other First Nation students to achieve a higher education.

“I think education is a way to the future for our people and hopefully with the new government more opportunities will be there.”

Also honoured on Wednesday was First Nations Bank CEO Keith Martell.

First Nations Child welfare activist Cindy Blackstock will be honoured later on Thursday.
