The First Nations unemployment rate in Saskatchewan is more than four times the provincial average while the Metis rate is twice as high.
The latest job numbers from Statistics Canada were released this morning. They show Saskatchewan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in May was down by a third of a point to 6%.
That’s almost a full point below the national average of 6.9% and the second lowest rate in the country behind Manitoba.
When it comes to aboriginal unemployment, the numbers do not look as good. First nations unemployment stood at 25.3% in May, that is an increase of nearly 9% from a year ago.
The Metis unemployment rate was 10.8%, up more than 3% from a year ago.
The aboriginal numbers are not seasonally adjusted, but are based on a three month averaging.
