A city councillor in Prince Albert says he doesn’t believe the opening of a gas bar and convenience store owned by the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation will negatively affect other businesses in the city.

Lee Atkinson says he has heard criticism from some business owners that they can’t match the tax-free

savings the newer facility offers.

However, he feels the creation of the band-owned business will be in the best interests of the city, as the money that First Nations people save on gas and cigarettes will likely be spread around other businesses.

PBCN chief Ron Michel says he has heard grumblings, as well, but points out several existing gas outlets offer membership discounts and coupon deals to their loyal clientele — so, he feels it shouldn’t be an issue.

He adds work continues to get the store plot designated as a reserve.
