A man from Sandy Bay is facing charges after police searched a home in the community last week.

RCMP say officers were checking on Leonard Merasty, 35, last Thursday.

He is serving a conditional sentence in the community.

Police say while in his home they came across a door which had been locked and bolted.

Inside they found a safe containing about $28,000.

Investigators say they also found several rifles and ammunition which which not properly stored.

Police believe one of the firearms was a shotgun which had been stolen in Alberta, and one rifle was loaded.

Merasty faces nine charges including obstructing a police officer, possession of property obtained by crime and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon.
