The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a recently formed organization devoted to First Nations workplace safety.

The Saskatchewan First Nations Safety Association (SFNSA) was created by Toby Desnomie earlier this year.

Desnomie, who has worked in occupational health and safety for nearly two decades, says he formed the organization because he saw a gap in workplace safety services for First Nations.

“To meet that gap I created and founded the safety association as a not-for-profit,” says the SFNSA CEO. “I put this organization together for public safety awareness as well as for safety directives for our communities.”

Desnomie signed a partnership with FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron Tuesday morning to ensure both organizations work toward the common goal of workplace safety for First Nations.

Chief Cameron says he wanted to sign on to the agreement because he sees a young Aboriginal workforce that is growing. He says the SFNSA will help meet the growing need for safety for these Aboriginal employees.

“This covers a whole lot of occupations across our treaty territories,” says Cameron. “We look forward to supporting safety for all of our First Nations in the workforce.”

The Saskatchewan First Nation Safety Association will be holding a conference in Saskatoon on Thursday.
