The cleanup of the old Gunnar uranium mine site in northern Saskatchewan is moving to a new phase.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has approved plans to proceed with the cleanup of waste rock, as well as open-pit and mine openings.

The cleanup is being handled by the Saskatchewan Research Council and is subject to strict guidelines by the safety commission, including public hearings and environmental controls on how the work is done.

The Gunnar mine, which is located near Uranium City, shut down more than 50 years ago.

The cleanup cost will be about $225 million dollars, with the province paying the bulk of the tab. It will take about another eight years before the cleanup is complete.
