Lac La Ronge Indian Band Heath Services and the RCMP are hosting a forum today called “I’m Not for Sale,” which deals with the issue of human trafficking of First Nation women and girls.
The event at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Complex features Diane Redsky, a First Nation expert with 20 years experience, working to end sexual exploitation and sex trafficking in Canada.
Redsky is presenting updated information on how exploiters and human traffickers target young First Nation girls and lure them into forced prostitution.
One of the local organizers of the event is Lillian Sanderson. She says human trafficking is an important topic, given the recent efforts being made in the area of missing and murdered Aboriginal woman and girls.
Sanderson says three of these forums are being held in Saskatchewan.
“This is an information session that the RCMP are taking into communities, La Loche, La Ronge and Stanley Mission,” she said.
Sanderson says sexual exploitation can be a difficult topic to discuss, but professional support is available through the La Ronge Band Health Services and the health region.
