The RCMP’s North District Commander says Loon Lake members put their safety on the line at a home on Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation on Wednesday night.
The officers were responding to a call on the reserve to find the house they were headed to was on fire, according to a news release.
They were able to help a man and woman get out safely, but the RCMP says while the members were searching the home for others, the man went back into the house. By then, the house had been engulfed in flames and was inaccessible, the RCMP says.
One officer was able to boost the other to get through a main floor bedroom window and pull the man to safety.
He was taken by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries, while the officers experienced minor smoke inhalation.
“Our members never know what they might encounter in the course of responding to a call. In this case, they put their own personal safety at risk to help others,” North District Commander, Supt. Larry Wilson said in a news release.
The cause of the fire and the original call for service are under investigation.
