Polls are open for elections on two the larger First Nations in the province.
In the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, members are voting to elect a new chief from among five candidates and 12 councillors from among 35 candidates. Little Red reserve, Grandmother’s Bay, Stanley Mission, Nemeiben and La Ronge are among the areas represented by the candidates.
Polls opened at 9 a.m. and there are four new polling stations this election at Pinehouse, Brabant Lake and in Prince Albert at the PA Inn and in Saskatoon at the Ramada Hotel.
Polls close tonight at 6 p.m., with counting of the ballots to begin shortly thereafter. Official results will be released on Saturday.
Meanwhile, members of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation will also be voting in a new chief and council.
Three people are vying for the position of Chief. The eight council positions are split into regions: five for Montreal Lake, two for Little Red River, and one urban.
Little Red River has six candidates, urban has six, and Montreal Lake has eight.
Four councillors from the previous administration who were suspended were not eligible to run in this election.
There are polling stations in four communities. On-reserve members can vote at the Little Red reserve Band Office or Montreal Lake Band Office while urban members can head to the Saskatoon Travelodge or in Prince Albert at Room 103 of the PA Inn.
All polling stations are open until 6 p.m.
