The Premier’s office has an update on the state of James Smith Cree Nation.

Late Tuesday afternoon, the Melfort-area reserve declared a state of emergency due to localized spring flooding that is blocking access to part of the community.

Now, the province says James Smith leadership has asked for the Red Cross and Emergency Social Services for help.

They have been working to evacuate about 66 health priority residents to Melfort.

If needed, provincial emergency crews are available to bring in pumps to move water and to provide water tanks so there is safe water to consume on the reserve.

However, at this time that help has not been requested. There is currently no update on the state of the road that has been most heavily impacted by the frost thaw.
