There are allegations of vote buying in last December’s election on the Canoe Lake Cree First Nation in northern Saskatchewan.

Losing candidates in the case are trying to have the results overturned and a new election called.

At this point, several pre-trial conferences have been held, and there has been a lot of legal paper work filed, but an application to contest the results has not yet been granted.

Meantime, the chief and council issued a statement to band members last month, saying there are false allegations being circulated through social media. They are asking members not to react to the negativity being circulated.

Another pre-trial conference on the application to challenge the results will be held next week in Saskatoon.

The chief has not returned our calls and has indicated because the case is before the courts, he can’t comment further.

The chief and council say they rise above the slander accusations, and at some point, will respond to the personal attacks with the facts.

Letter sent to Canoe Lake Cree First Nation members.
