The National Aboriginal Curling Championships are scheduled to take place this weekend in Saskatoon.

It’s the third year the Northern Village of Ile-a-la-Crosse has sponsored the event. Organizers are expecting around 40 teams this time around.

“We have 30 teams competing in the men’s division, and I believe we have six women’s teams — in the women’s division,” said one of the organizers, Duane Favel. “We’re looking forward to bringing the Aboriginal community together again in Saskatoon.”

Curlers are coming from all over to compete for a slice of the $22,000 that is up for grabs at the tournament.

“Of course, the majority of the teams are from Saskatchewan, but we will get teams from Manitoba and Alberta,” said Favel. “Sometimes we’ll get teams from the territories, and players come from as far as Ontario.”

The tournament will also feature a curling clinic for youth, which will be ran by Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton.

Things are scheduled to begin on Friday at the Granite Curling Club in Saskatoon. The event will conclude on Monday.
